Mega-corporations now dominate the international economy. This development, under the rubric of globalization, is heralded by the White House, Wall Street, and the media. They say it's a good thing. Villagers in poor Third World countries get the opportunity to earn and improve their lives. Critics contend that not only are those villagers exploited but that corporations weaken democracy, undermine workers and unions and threaten the environment.

Kevin Danaher is co-founder and public education director of Global Exchange, the San Francisco-based non-profit organization that led the campaign that exposed Nike's use of sweatshop labor and promotes grassroots, citizen-oriented efforts in international trade. He is the author of Corporations Are Gonna Get Your Mama, 50 Years Is Enough, Globalize This!, and Democratizing the Global Economy. www.globalexchange.org
